Rondevlei and SurroundsRondevlei and Surrounds

Ke Nako Lodges is situated near the tiny residential community of Rondevlei, which is also the name of one of five bodies of water that form the protected Wilderness Lakes area in the Garden Route of South Africa's Western Province.

Beautifully surrounded by the Indian Ocean, the Outeniqua Mountains and the holiday towns of Wilderness and Sedgefield, the area is listed on the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance, especially as a waterfowl habitat. It comprises a lagoon and the floodplain of the Touws River, linked by a natural channel called the Serpentine to the three lakes Elandsvlei, Langvlei (which Ke Nako overlooks) and Rondevlei. These lakes, together with the nearby Swartvlei, are the only warm-temperate coastal lakes with a marine connection in South Africa and support prolific bird, fish, insect and animal life.

Great parts of the region are under the protection of conservation bodies South African National Parks and CapeNature. Private land is mainly used for farming and forestry.

Famous for its food, arts and lifestyle markets, Sedgefield is a popular outdoor, water and adventure sports destination. The Swartvlei estuary flows alongside this mellow town, which was named the first Cittaslow Town in Africa in 2010. It is bordered in the south by the Goukamma Nature Reserve and Marine Protected Area which boasts some of the most pristine beaches in the southern Cape.

Wilderness is a popular tourism and lifestyle resort known for in-season whale and dolphin spotting as well as wide beaches, soft-flowing rivers, indigenous forests and related adventure activities.
